Augself Documentation

Everything you need to create, customize, and deploy your AI-powered digital twin. From getting started to advanced self-hosted deployment.

Getting Started

What is Augself?

Augself lets you create an AI-powered digital twin that knows about you, your work, and your expertise. Your twin can represent you online 24/7, answering questions from visitors based on the documents you upload.

Create Your Account

  1. Visit augself.ai and click "Get Started"
  2. Enter your email and create a password (minimum 8 characters)
  3. Accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
  4. Check your email for a verification link
  5. Click the link to activate your account
  6. Log in to access your dashboard

Tip: Check your spam folder if you don't see the verification email within a few minutes.

Creating Your Digital Twin

Create a New Twin

  1. Go to My Twins in the sidebar
  2. Click the "Create Twin" button
  3. Enter a name for your twin (e.g., your name or brand)
  4. The system generates a URL slug automatically
  5. Customize the slug if desired (lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens only)
  6. Click "Create"

After creation, you'll be taken to the settings page where you can customize your twin's appearance, upload documents, and configure its behavior.

Knowledge Base

The knowledge base is the heart of your digital twin. It determines what your twin knows and can answer questions about.

Supported File Formats

FormatExtensionBest For

Word Document.docxFormatted documents
Plain Text.txtSimple content, notes
Markdown.mdStructured content

Maximum file size: 10MB per document

How to Upload Documents

  3. Drag and drop files or click to browse
  4. Wait for processing to complete (status shows "completed")

What to Upload

  • Resume/CV and portfolio descriptions
  • Case studies and project summaries
  • Service descriptions and pricing info
  • FAQ documents and blog posts
  • Skills lists and certifications
  • Company or personal bio information
  • LinkedIn profile export (see below)
  • Website content via the Import from Website feature

How to Download Your LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile contains valuable information about your experience and skills. Here's how to export it:

  1. Log in to LinkedIn on desktop
  2. Click your profile pictureSettings & Privacy
  3. Go to Data privacyGet a copy of your data
  4. Select "Want something in particular?"
  5. Check "Profile" and click Request archive
  6. LinkedIn will email you when it's ready (usually within 24 hours)
  7. Download the ZIP file, extract it, and upload the Profile.pdf to your twin

Tip: You can also save your LinkedIn profile as a PDF directly by clicking the "More" button on your profile page and selecting "Save to PDF".

Import from Website

You can import content directly from any public website. This is great for adding information from your portfolio, blog posts, or company pages.

  1. Go to your twin's Knowledge tab
  2. Find the "Import from Website" card
  3. Enter the URL of the page you want to import
  4. Check "Crawl entire site" to import multiple pages (up to 10)

Best Sites to Import

  • Personal portfolio or company website
  • Blog posts and articles you've written
  • Documentation or help pages
  • Public profiles (that allow scraping)

Note: Some websites block scraping or require login. JavaScript-heavy single-page applications may not import all content. For best results, use sites with standard HTML content.

Best Practices

  • Be specific - Include details, numbers, and examples
  • Cover common questions - Think about what visitors will ask
  • Structure content - Use headers and bullet points
  • Update regularly - Add new documents as things change

Knowledge Base Limits

PlanDocumentsWebsitesTotal ChunksPages per Crawl
Free10350010
ProUnlimited2010,00010

About the Bio Field

On both platforms, the Bio field is used as background knowledge for the AI—it's not displayed to visitors in the chat interface. The AI uses the bio to understand who you are and can reference this information when answering questions. Use the Tagline field for the short description visitors see under your name in the chat header.

Admin Access

  • Cloud: Login with your Augself account email and password
  • Self-Hosted: Access the admin panel at /admin using the password set in your ADMIN_PASSWORD environment variable

Importing from Cloud

If you're migrating from Augself Cloud to self-hosted, you can export your twin from the cloud dashboard and import it into your self-hosted instance:

  1. In Cloud: Go to your twin's settings and click Export
  2. Download the ZIP file containing your twin config and documents
  3. In Self-Hosted: Go to /admin and use the Import from ZIP option

Note: You must delete any existing twin before importing. The self-hosted version only supports one twin at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Augself different from ChatGPT?

Augself creates a personalized AI trained on YOUR documents. ChatGPT is a general AI. Your twin only knows what you teach it, ensuring accurate representation of you.

Can my twin answer any question?

Your twin can only answer based on uploaded documents. It won't fabricate information. If asked about something not in its knowledge base, it acknowledges the limitation.

Is my data secure?

Yes. Documents are encrypted and stored securely. We never share your data. For maximum control, use the self-hosted option.

What AI models are used?

Cloud version uses GPT-4o-mini. Self-hosted users can choose OpenAI, Anthropic, or free Ollama models (Llama, Mistral, etc.).

What happens if I cancel Pro?

You retain access until billing period ends, then revert to Free limits. Your data remains intact.

Does my twin learn from conversations?

No. Your twin only knows what's in your uploaded documents. It doesn't learn from chat conversations.
